DeWalt DCN660P2
2nd Fix Nail Gun

The Why!

Quite simple really, I already had a basic electric second fix nail gun. It’s a Rapesco which is great other than the short power cable. The problem with this is that it means you have to take an extension lead into the property. Apart from this creating a potential trip hazard to the customer and yourself, you can guarantee it will snag on everything, in particular the the plug gets wedged on everything. Another small and minor issue is the rubber nose keeps falling off, but as I say, only minor.

So why choose DeWalt? As usual I chose this brand as I already have some of their kit and it makes sense to keep to one type of battery, for charging up and being interchangeable.

I bought the spec that came with a battery, charger and case. I wasn’t to bothered about the battery and charger, it was more for the case. This case is tailor made for the gun and reduces risk of damage. Check out the photos

First Impressions

It arrived in a well packed outer but as it came in it's own tailored carry case I knew it would be secure.

Opened it up and took out the gun. It's quite heavy but in a good way, with the battery attached if feels well balanced.

Forgot my existing nail gun has straight nails so had to wait until I got some angled ones.

So what's in the box

This is the DCN660P2 edition, which came with 2 5ah batteries, a charger and tailored case along with the standard instruction book.

I registered it online and noticed that this was only a 1 year warranty without the usual extension!

Using it

Due to the variety of work I cover I’m not a frequent user of this, so I tested it out and all seemed fine. About a month later I used it secure some internal cladding to a timber frame, about every 20th fire I got a jam. I discovered that the firing pin that pushes the nail into the job hadn’t returned into the gun. I wasn’t sure if this was just a thing so put up with it. I carried on like this until one day it just jammed up after every 5th fire. As you can imagine this started to waste time.

To clear the jam you have to

  • remove the battery
  • open the front and release the pin.
  • reattach the battery and all is good.

Now removing the battery is two fold, as you can clear the pin with out removing it but the gun remains unusable until the battery is removed and refitted so I got in to the habit of taking the battery out first, a good safety step really.

So the next thing I did was contact DeWalt. Then came the realisation I was 10 days outside the warranty period. They advised me that my only option was to take it to an Authorised repair centre.  Problem being, there isn’t one local to me so had to pay to have it collected and delivered to the centre and pay in advance to cover its return. The repair centre got in touch and told me the firing pin mechanism was faulty and offered at a cost, to replace it. Bearing in mind the cost of these things I thought it would be worth it. Gave the go ahead and awaited its return.

Once I got it back I took it to the workshop and set about testing it. It’s worth mentioning that in preparation of its return I went out and bought DeWalt nails just in case my Tacwise ones were the cause. Also note that the instructions for the gun state that it can be any manufacturer but just wanted to rule it out. So I fired a few nails into some softwood and much to my annoyance it jammed after the 10th fire. Reset it, swapped for another set and length of nails and again jammed after the 6th fire. Rang the repairer and was basically told that it’s a new fault and I would have to pay postage to return it, but as the conversation went on I was told it would be more cost effective to buy a new one! This was very disappointing as I'd hardly used and feel I haven't had my moneys worth out of it.

Conclusion

  • It feels great and when working feels as good as a gas version.
  • This version came with a good sturdy carry case, 2x 5ah batteries and charger.
  • The manufacturer states you can use any make of 16g nails, which is good as DeWalt ones are pricey.
  • Am I happy? No I'm not.
  • Will I buy a replacement? I don't know, watch this space.
