The Why!
There were two main reasons for getting a dash and reverse camera.
The first was for safety, being a van driver I have been brake tested a few times, thankfully its never resulted in a collision but having the camera gives piece of mind.
The second reason was for the permanent rear view option. My van has solid back doors and has a bulkhead between the cab and the rear so the only way to see out the back is using the wing mirrors. This was secondary and now I will never go back to not having one.
I'm in the process of looking for a slightly newer van and if it doesn't come with a built in camera I will install one as soon as possible.
Using it
The kit arrived in the box you can see in the photo above.
This included;
You only need two of the fitting straps. These hook on to the rear of the camera and hold it on to your existing mirror.
In my case, I had to go and get a mirror as my van wasn't fitted with one.
As I didn't want cables hanging down from my mirror to the dash I decided to buy the hardwire kit. This can been seen to the right.
To be honest this was quite an easy install, I fed the cable from the mirror behind the roof lining and down the pillar, the fuse box which was just at the bottom of the pillar.
This kit allowed me to piggy back on an existing fuse so made this really easy. This was the correct fuse type for my van, make sure you check what type/size fuses your vehicle has before purchasing.
The cable to the reverse camera went around the edge of the roof lining and passed into the back of the van. I then threaded it through to the rear high level brake light and passed the cable through the edge of the light making a small ridge so the cable didn't get trapped.
The camera in the image below is a newer replacement, this was done under warranty with no issues.
For the purpose I bought this it has been brilliant and I would buy another one tomorrow. But, I have been looking around and it appears to be out of stock at Auto Vox and doesn't appear on the Amazon Website. From what I can see there is now a V5 Pro. The problem I have with this one is that it is designed to replace your existing mirror, the issue with this is that a lot of the modern mirrors have sensors and other functions built in to them. Further digging I found the Auto Vox X7 looks like it is the replacement for my V5. It has a 2k Resolution. Sadly though it doesn't look if it is currently available in the UK.
I have had this a number of years now and have no reason to change it. The image is lovely and clear and makes day to day driving so much better.
You can see from my You Tube video that I have mine set high up so works for me as a rear view mirror rather than a reversing camera. The other advantage of this is that it doesn't get too dirty, but when it does, a simple wipe and you're good to go.
You can set the reverse guidelines too but I never bothered.
