The Why!
Its quite simple really, I was getting fed up of using my mains palm sander with the cable, extension lead and my faithful Henry Vacuum Cleaner hose attached.
The obvious choice was to go with DeWalt as I'd already a few batteries.
Like before, I had read a number of the reviews and took the plunge.
On this occasion I purchased it from Screwfix as I had a money off voucher to use before it expired.
Not a lot, this is what they call the 'Naked' edition, which means no batteries and no case.
The lack of batteries is fine with me as I have plenty of batteries with my other kit.
Its pretty basic as contents go, there is the Palm Sander, the cloth dust bag and obviously the mountain of instructions etc. A bit underwhelming but it is what it is.
The first time I used it I thought it was faulty! I wasn't used to the way it was designed to respond to pressure. Apply too much pressure and it actually stops spinning. This is to prevent you stripping to much material. Once I realised why it was doing this I learnt to appreciate it more.
The dust bag has the DeWalt twist lock mechanism which keeps it securely in place, It is quite efficient at collecting a lot of the dust. This is okay for a few smaller jobs but when it comes to something bigger then you need a dust extractor. You do need anything fancy make use of the DeWalt DWV9000-XJ Universal Adaptor attached to my faithful Henry Vacuum Cleaner and love it.
I have used mine on wood, metal, painted walls and ceilings. The sanding discs are held on with Velcro, I tend to use an 80 or 120 grit paper which covers most applications for me.
Its worth noting that this is a random orbital sander, what this means is that as well as spinning in a circular motion the whole this is vibrating in a random pattern, this aids to prevent swirl marks and create a smoother finish.
The only slightly negative I can find is the the protected on/off switch can be a bit fiddly to operate.
As always with DeWalt gear, remember to register for the extended warranty.
